Klonopin: What Kind of Drug Is It?

Klonopin (generic name clonazepam) is a benzodiazepine tranquilizer that is usually used to treat panic attacks or convulsions. Besides, it is used as a treatment for movement disorders such as akathisia (when a person feels very restless and has an urge to move all the time), bruxism (teeth grinding and jaw clenching), rapid eye movement behavior disorder and restless leg syndrome. Like other benzodiazepines, Klonopin regulates the central nervous system and produces a calming effect.

How Should I Take It?

Klonopin is available in regular or orally disintegrated tablets (also called “wafers”). Regular tablets should be swallowed with a glass of water; wafers are meant to be dissolved on the tongue. It is recommended to use the drug as your doctor advised: try to take it at the same time every day, skip the dose if you are too late and don't double it. Also, don't take larger or smaller doses: larger dosage may increase side effects, while smaller one may not be effective enough. However, don't stop taking Klonopin without your therapist's advice as you may get unpleasant withdrawal symptoms, such as headache, dizziness, depression, tremors and other effects. It is strongly recommended not to drink alcohol when taking the drug because alcohol can increase its side effects. Before driving or doing something that requires attention and concentration make sure the medicine doesn't make you feel drowsy, and if you do feel this way, avoid those activities. What's more, Klonopin may have a bad effect on your blood and liver, so make sure you make blood and liver tests on a regular basis while using the medication.

Side Effects and Contraindications

It is very common to feel tired, drowsy and sleepy during the course of Klonopin. Besides, sometimes saliva production in mouth increases. If you feel uncomfortable with those symptoms or they are getting worse, don't hesitate to call a medical specialist. Inform him/her as soon as possible if your mood suddenly starts to change, your memory worsens or you feel depressed, if you get bruised easily or have flu symptoms.  Don't take Klonopin if you know that you are allergic to it or other drugs of benzodiazepine class. If reactions such as itching, swelling and difficulty breathing appear, you must get help at once. Make sure you talk to your doctor before using it if you have eye, kidney, liver or lungs diseases, mental problems, history of drug or alcohol abuse. Moreover, the medicine is not recommended for pregnant, breastfeeding women and children, and it might cause stronger side effects in elderly adults. Besides, Klonopin can interact with a number of other medications that treat allergy, cold, depression, insomnia, etc. Tell a pharmacist about all the drugs you are taking regularly, and inform your doctor that you are taking Klonopin before any surgery, because it may interact with anesthetics. Today it is easy to buy the drug you need online, and Klonopin is not an exception. An established online pharmacy will provide you not only with quality medicines, but inexpensive prices and other suitable services.
